How to make classic vanilla sponge cake?

Vanilla sponge cake is an absolute classic, and it's the base of many famous and popular desserts and iced cakes. If you don't yet know how to make this fluffy and soft treat, then here you can read the recipe. Don't be afraid, it's rather easy to bake the vanilla sponge cake!

4 eggs

A cup of flour

A cup of granulated sugar

1 tablespoon of vanilla extract

1 teaspoon of baking powder

1 teaspoon of baking powder

3 tablespoons of vegetable oil

How to prepare the vanilla sponge cake?

Preheat the oven to 180 °C, and line a medium sized cake pan with parchment paper.

First, separate the 4 eggs, and whip the whites until thick, firm and foamy. Put the whites aside, and let's prepare the rest of the batter.

Mix the egg yolks with the rest of the ingredients in a large bowl. Make sure no lumps remain in the batter.

Gradually add the whipped whites into the bowl and mix it with the rest of the batter, but do it carefully and avoid over-mixing it.

Pour the batter into the cake pan.

Bake the sponge cake for 30-45 minutes, or until nice golden brown. You can test whether it's ready or not by using a fork or a needle: if you spike it into the middle of the cake and it comes out without any batter sticking to it, then the cake is baked.

Let your cake cool down before you serve it.

Vanilla sponge cake is quite good to eat with a cup of coffee, but you can also use some cream and icing, or you can also serve it with some jam and powdered sugar. If you like Italian desserts, you can also use the sponge cake to make delicious tiramisu. It all depends on your taste and creativity!
